Power Line Safety: Stay Away From Downed Lines

Downed power lines can be deadly. Always assume a downed power line is live and dangerous and avoid approaching it or anything near it. Call 911 first, then report downed lines to Central Lincoln at (877) 265-3211.

  • Never touch a downed power line.
  • Never drive over downed power lines or anything in contact with them.
  • Never try to move a downed power line – even using items that are not typically conductive.
  • Never touch fences, guardrails, vehicles, or anything else that is in contact with a power line. These can be energized and deadly.

If a person comes into contact with an energized line:

  • Call 911.
  • Don’t try to rescue the person. The electrical current can travel through them to you, and you could become a victim as well.
  • Warn others to stay away.

Downed Lines and vehicles:

  • Call 911.
  • Stay in the vehicle, if possible, until help arrives.
  • If there is fire or smoke and you have to get out of the vehicle, do not touch the ground and vehicle at the same time. Jump clear of the vehicle with both feet together. Hop with both feet together until you are at least 50 feet away (about the length of two school buses).
