Downed Power Lines

Downed power lines can be deadly. Always assume a downed power line is live and dangerous and avoid approaching them or anything near them. Always call 911 first, then report downed lines to Central Lincoln at (877) 265-3211.

  • Never touch a downed power line.
  • Never drive over downed power lines or anything in contact with them.
  • Never try to move a downed power line – even using items that are not typically conductive.
  • Never touch fences, guardrails, vehicles or anything else that is in contact with the power line. They can be energized and deadly.

If a person comes into contact with an energized line:

  • Call 911.
  • Don’t try to rescue the person. The electrical current can travel through them to you and you could become a victim as well.
  • Warn others to stay away.

Downed Lines and vehicles:

  • Call 911.
  • Stay in the vehicle, if possible, until help arrives.
  • In the event of fire or smoke and you have to get out of the vehicle, do not touch the ground and vehicle at the same time. Jump clear of the vehicle with both feet together. Hop with both feet together until at least 50 feet away (about the length of two school buses).
