Protect Yourself From Scams

Central Lincoln wants to help protect you from scams targeting utility customers nationwide. These scams are certainly not new, but the frequency and tactics behind them are increasing at an alarming rate.

Scammers may target customers through phone calls, text messages, social media messages, email and by knocking on their doors.

To avoid falling victim to a scam, please keep the following information in mind.

Tactics Frequently Used by Scammers

  • Scammers will often say your service is scheduled to be disconnected in the next 15-30 minutes if payment is not made immediately. Fact: Central Lincoln will not contact any customer demanding immediate payment to avoid disconnection of service the same day.
  • Scammers may ask you to make a payment with a prepaid card or a gift card over the phone. Fact: Central Lincoln customer service representatives cannot take payment over the phone. We only accept payment in our offices, through our Pay by Phone system at (877) 265-3211, or through SmartHub.
  • Scammers use a deceptive tactic that makes it appear to caller ID systems that the call is coming from Central Lincoln when it is not. Fact: Make sure the number on your caller ID is Central Lincoln’s – (877) 265-3211.

If you believe you have been contacted by a scammer, please note any information you can – phone number on caller ID, addresses or call back numbers for making payments, etc. – and report it to us at (877) 265-3211, your local police and the Federal Trade Commission at (877) FTC-HELP.
