Replacing Brown Glass, Strengthening Reliability

Over the summer, one of our northern line crews completed what’s known as the “Brown Glass Project,” replacing aging brown glass insulators along the transmission line between Waldport and Yachats.

The crew visited 30 structures in total, replacing 113 insulators and reframing six “Lazy A” poles — an older crossarm design named for its sideways A-shape. While they were there, they also replaced corroded hardware and adjusted line sag where needed to maintain proper clearance and reduce strain on poles and wires.

Many of the insulators being replaced have been in service for decades. Projects like this are an important part of Central Lincoln’s ongoing effort to maintain the grid and ensure our communities continue to receive dependable power year-round.

Central Lincoln crews replace old “brown glass” insulators on a transmission line deep within a forested right-of-way, using climbing gear, trucks, and off-road equipment.
