Why “Community-Owned” Is So Important

October is Public Power Month, and thousands of communities across the U.S. are celebrating!

“Public Power” is another term for community-owned utilities (COUs), including Central Lincoln.  What does it mean to have a community-owned electric utility?

Board Members Elected by Our Customers: Control at the local level benefits the community.  Central Lincoln is governed by five locally elected board members who serve for the benefit of our customer-owners.  In contrast, investor-owned utility boards are charged with making sure their utilities are operated in ways that make money for stockholders.
