Getting Ready

Our communications, substation, and meter crews serve our entire service area, and are now based in our new Northern Operations Center, which is significantly above the tsunami inundation zone, and built to withstand an earthquake.  This is a great relief, since the old facility would have been flooded in a tsunami, and the buildings were not built to earthquake standards.  There is much more ahead as we prepare to meet the challenges resulting from a significant emergency event.

  • We are reviewing our Florence, Newport, and Reedsport facilities, and deciding how best to make them resilient in the event of a disaster.
  • A business continuity plan and an emergency action plan are being developed, mapping out the intricate steps required to restore power after a wide variety of emergencies, from fire to earthquakes, and how best to prepare and staff after a disaster.
  • We have implemented ICS (incident command structure), providing incident management protocol—guidelines for responding to complex and demanding events.  All Central Lincoln employees complete ICS 100 (basic) training, and many have or will soon complete additional ICS coursework, depending on job duties.
  • Central Lincoln participates in regional and local mutual aid efforts, and emergency readiness.  We recently helped other utilities after extreme winter storms including the Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB) and Lane Electric Co-op.  (Those utilities reimbursed Central Lincoln for the full costs of crews’ time and equipment use during these events.)  Thanks to mutual aid, we know we can count on our partners when we need them.
