We track the causes of outages; trees and winds are the main reason power can go out. But a growing problem is underground line failures. Fifty years ago, it was an accepted practice to “direct bury” energized lines underground. Today, some of those “hot” lines have gotten worn and corroded, and when they fail, repairs usually take hours.
If you aren’t absolutely certain you know if there are any electric lines buried around your home, or where cable, sewer, and water lines are located, please call 8-1-1. A dispatcher will send out utility workers to mark what’s under your property at no cost to you. We don’t want a simple spring flower planting project to end with an electrical accident.
